A few customers have inquired about the difference between hemp and jute cord. They are very similar. Both are very popular and trendy and represent the natural boho-chic themes from the 70's and 80's. Jute comes in a number of difference sizes from 1 ply to 6 ply and is very soft to work with. Hemp has a number of different finishes and poundage but is a little stiffer to tie knots with. both have their own unique appeal.
Jute cord is composed of cellulose and lignin and found in the Corchorus Olitorius and Corchorus Capsularis plants, jute is known as the “golden fiber” for its color and affordability. These long, soft, and shiny fibers are found in Southern Asia and Africa, and their use dates back to Ancient Egypt. Today, jute fibers are spun into strong, coarse threads to make Jute Rope, twine, burlap, textiles, rugs, and crafts. I lo ve the natural appearance and is recommended indoor use however you can display in entryway or under overhang but not recommended due to the natural vegetable fiber.
Hemp cord is a variety of the Cannabis family (Sativa L). Hemp fibers have been utilized for over 10,000 years, and unlike jute, is popular for its medical benefits, including (but not limited to) reducing the effects of anxiety, Alzheimer’s, and inflammation throughout the body. Hemp’s soft fibers can also be manipulated in various ways to produce fibers for Hemp Rope, paper, clothing, textiles, animal feed, and building materials.
For instance, both hemp and Twisted Jute Rope make excellent rope options for the garden, food prep, landscape, crafting, nautical, and general outdoor use. If the strongest natural rope is needed for your application, hemp would be the best choice. When wet, jute is more likely to shrink than hemp, so if this is a concern, hemp might be the better rope option for water or nautical use.
